Tinnitus and hearing changes
Some people report tinnitus (hearing ringing, buzzing or other sounds that aren’t coming from an external source) or other hearing changes after Covid-19.
What it can feel like
ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming in one or both ears
sound that is constant or comes and goes
symptoms that feel worse in quiet environments, at night, or when tired
tinnitus alongside muffled hearing, ear fullness, dizziness, or sound sensitivity
What can help day-to-day
Tinnitus is often influenced by stress, poor sleep and anxiety. Supportive strategies can include:
sound enrichment (background sound such as ocean waves, radio, or a fan, especially at night)
relaxation approaches (breathing exercises, meditation, gentle yoga)
staying connected (talking to someone, peer support), as isolation can make tinnitus feel louder
some people also find tinnitus apps helpful. The NHS recommends the ReSound Tinnitus Relief app.
