Tinnitus and hearing changes

Some people report tinnitus (hearing ringing, buzzing or other sounds that aren’t coming from an external source) or other hearing changes after Covid-19.

What it can feel like

  • ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming in one or both ears

  • sound that is constant or comes and goes

  • symptoms that feel worse in quiet environments, at night, or when tired

  • tinnitus alongside muffled hearing, ear fullness, dizziness, or sound sensitivity

What can help day-to-day

Tinnitus is often influenced by stress, poor sleep and anxiety. Supportive strategies can include:

  • sound enrichment (background sound such as ocean waves, radio, or a fan, especially at night)

  • relaxation approaches (breathing exercises, meditation, gentle yoga)

  • staying connected (talking to someone, peer support), as isolation can make tinnitus feel louder

  • some people also find tinnitus apps helpful. The NHS recommends the ReSound Tinnitus Relief app.
